He grabbed his trousers from the backseat floorboard and stepped swiftly into them, snatching them up his long legs and fastening them with lightning speed and accuracy as he darted around to the driver’s side, leaping over without opening the door as soon as he had a hand free to catch himself. His button-down shirt was on faster than the eye could blink, and before Patty could fasten her seatbelt, he had the car cranked and was pulling back onto the gravel and moving toward the main road.
Once they were back on the main highway, she found her voice.
“What was that?” she questioned. “What happened back there?”
“Oeh,” he said, blushing profusely. “I em tearrubly soerrie! I shuld hav neber taekin aedvaentige of u like dat! My ada wuld hav me tyed nekkid tu a trea en frunt of a hoel skwad of elbin aerchurs if he neuw I haed dun sumpthaeng like dat!”
“No, no,” she said. “I mean, why did we leave so quickly? What was it that you sensed?”
“Saensed?”
“Yes, sensed. DUH! You jerked your head over to look at the road and hissed at me to get in the car. What was out there?”
“Deedn’t u sea da litez coemin doewn da roawd? Deedn’t u here da kaer?”
“I didn’t see or hear anything,” she confessed, still feeling frightened. “What was it? A policecar? Another couple?” Suddenly the worst thought in the world came to her. She’d heard the horror stories, read the papers, seen the movies. She reached out and clung needily to his forearm. “Was it a serial killer??”
“Fangurlz,” he whispered.
